The 2020 MG RC-6 Adds SUV Ride Height to an Executive Sedan Body

Do you think there’s a market for an executive sedan with the ride height of an SUV? MG thinks so and to prove it, here’s the MG RC-6.

Like the MG Hector / Chevrolet Captiva, the RC-6 starts its life under the SAIC-GM-Wuling joint venture. For its move to the global arena though, the “Treasure Horse” logo has been swapped for the more familiar octagonal MG logo.

MG believes the RC-6 is a shoe-in for countries with bad roads (yes, like the Philippines). At 4,925 mm in length and 1,800 mm in width, it’s basically an executive sedan in size—think Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. But with an overall height of 1,580 mm, and an even more impressive 198 mm of ground clearance, it offers the advantages of an SUV while still promising the driving dynamics of a sedan. Oddly enough though, it’s still fitted with relatively low-profile 225/55 R 18 tires.

Upfront, it carries a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine making 147 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque. It transmits this power either via a 6-speed manual or CVT transmission driving the front wheels solely.

While the mechanicals aren’t that impressive, the MG RC-6 does come with a suite of driver assist tech. Using a combination of millimeter-wave radar and a high-definition camera, the RC-6 has adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and intelligent high-beam assist. It even has a blind spot warning, too.

For now, it’s unknown whether MG Philippines will take the lead of other global markets such as India which has opted to introduce the RC-6 there. However, if MG Philippine does, expect it to carve a niche similar to how Subaru has done it with the Outback which is basically a lifted Legacy wagon. The interesting bit though is the pricing. In its home market of China, the MG RC-6 tops out at just RMB 123,800 or about P 900,000.
