Hey, Subaru. I hope you’re listening. Next time you’re thinking of making your Forester as mainstream as a Toyota RAV4, perhaps you should take a look at this: it’s a 302-horsepower version called the RAV4 Prime.
Yes, 302 horsepower. And no, that’s not a typo. See, Toyota has just harnessed its expertise in engineering petrol-electric hybrid engines to make this thing work. Using more powerful motors and a newly-developed high-capacity lithium-ion battery, this compact crossover develops 302 horsepower and rockets to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds. What’s more, because it’s a plug-in hybrid, it does all this while still delivering a pure electric range of 62 kilometers.
More than just raw power, surefootedness is provided by a sport-tuned suspension supplemented by an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive. Separate rear-mounted electric motor powers the rear wheels when needed, including proactively on acceleration startup and also in reduced-traction conditions. The system can also reduce understeer as well as improve hill-climbing performance.
The RAV4 Prime communicates its sportiness through exclusive painted 18-inch alloy wheels, and exclusive front grille and front lower spoiler. High-gloss piano black accents complete the look. An exclusive trim version shows off a brand-new shade: Supersonic Red, ups the wheel sizes to 19 inches, and adds a two-tone roof design.
Seriously, Subaru. First, Mazda introduced a turbocharged CX-5, and now Toyota does this. Please, gods of symmetrical all-wheel drive, give us back a turbocharged Forester. At this rate, even Mr. Boring (aka Toyota) will make faster cars or SUVs than you.
The Toyota RAV4 Prime will be sold exclusively in the U.S. (for now) by next year. After that, other markets should follow. Now, while Toyota Motor Philippines remains cold originally on the idea of a hybrid crossover, they did say that the Corolla Altis Hybrid is the first of many upcoming hybrids. Cross your fingers, SUV buyers.
