Hyundai Philippines Throws the Fuel Economy Gauntlet with the Ioniq Hybrid

Hyundai Asia Resources, Inc., the exclusive distributor of Hyundai vehicles in the Philippines isn’t taking the arrival of the Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid sitting down. In fact, they’ve now thrown the gauntlet down in terms of fuel efficiency with its Ioniq Hybrid, achieving 1,956 kilometers of range with a single tank of fuel.

These figures, according to Hyundai, were extrapolated based on a round trip test drive from Manila to Baguio which was observed by the Automobile Association of the Philippines. The run, which was actually done last March showed that Hyundai’s electrified compact averaged 18.7 km/L in city driving and 43.47 km/L on the highway.

Priced at P 1,548,000, the Ioniq Hybrid is built on Hyundai’s dedicated electrified platform. Compared to its Toyota rival, the Ioniq Hybrid is powered by a smaller, but more powerful internal combustion engine. Its 1.6-liter CVVT engine generates 105 horsepower and 147 Nm of torque. However, it does have a less powerful electric motor—generating just 62 percent of the Corolla Altis Hybrid’s peak output (43.5 Horsepower, 170 Nm of torque). The Hyundai does have the advantage of using a more advanced, lighter weight lithium-ion polymer battery. The sole transmission is a 6-speed dual clutch automatic with adaptive cruise control.

Aside from the Ioniq Hybrid, HARI is also offering the full-electric version of the Ioniq priced at P 1,868,000.
